Moldova Rep. of

The Republic of Moldova is a small but beautiful country situated in the Eastern part of Europe  with a current population of 2.9 million people (2025). For us living in Europe it’s a day’s journey away from the comfort of our own home. Its people are friendly and welcoming. Moldova is a landlocked country, wedged in between Romania in the West and Ukraine to the East.

However, Moldova is considered one of  the poorest countries Europe. A socially backslidden country, that broke loose from the Soviet Union in 1998 and formed its own republic. It has since then been politically unstable, torn between Russia and the EU. The recent elections held in Moldova (2025) has propelled the country towards EU, breaking away from Russian dominance.

Only during the past few years the country has lost a great deal of its inhabitants to other countries. It’s currently the only country in Europe with a negative population trend. Much due to the corruption and low level of income, many, mostly in the age bracket between 18-35, leave or have left the country.

The average monthly income (2025) is approximately 16 100 MDL  (808€) per month. The pensions, compared to other countries in Europe, are also also significantly lower. From 2025, the average pension is appr. 4 407 MDL (220€) per month, while the cost of living for pensioners have increased substantially. A basket of groceries is costing roughly 1,978 – 2,346 MDL per month (98€ – 117€).

Because of the social stigma many people live under, many also suffer. With no or very little money many struggles to survive. The young, with means to travel and connections in the West, has since long left the country.  Unless fundamental changes are made on a political level, that ends corruption and misuse of common resources, this country is faced with a not so bright future. Please pray for Moldova and its people. More than ever, they need to find salvation i Jesus Christ.
